Rodney Brooks

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING AWARD WINNER 2015


Rodney Brooks is an Entrepreneur, Founder, Chairman & CTO of rethink robotics (formerly Heartland Robotics), also a Founder, former Board Member (’90/’11) & former CTO (’90/’08) of iRobot Corp (Nasdaq: IRBT). Former Director (’97/’07) of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory & then the MIT Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). Brooks received degrees in Pure Maths from Flinders University, & a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford. He held research positions at Carnegie Mellon and MIT, & a faculty position at Stanford before joining MIT faculty in ’84. Has published many papers in computer vision, artificial intelligence, robotics, & artificial life.

Brooks served as a member of the International Scientific Advisory Group of National Information & Communication Technology Australia & on the Global Innovation & Technology Advisory Council of John Deere. He is currently Xconomist at Xconomy & regular contributor to the Edge.

He is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, Founding Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, Corresponding Member of the Australian Academy of Science & Foreign Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He won the Computers and Thought Award at the 1991 Int Joint Conf on Artificial Intelligence. He has been the Cray Lecturer at the University of Minnesota, the Mellon Lecturer at Dartmouth & Forsythe Lecturer at Stanford. He co-founded the Int J of Computer Vision & is a member of the editorial boards of various journals including Adaptive Behavior, Artificial Life, Applied Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Robots & New Generation Computing. He starred as himself in the 1997 Errol Morris movie “Fast, Cheap & Out of Control” named for one of his scientific papers.
