Mr Kim Robinson is one of Asia’s most noted hairstylists. A career spanning more than thirty years has taken him from the catwalks of the world’s fashion capitals to the pages of Harpers Bazaar, Elle and French Vogue. He has attracted an A-list clientele that has included Princess Diana, Isabella Rossellini, Audrey Hepburn and supermodels Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Kate Moss.
But his home and heart are very much in Asia where, from his Hong Kong base, he has styled some of the continent’s most beautiful women in a career he describes as “a most amazing adventure”.
Born in Western Australia, Mr Robinson’s love affair with Asian beauty was kindled as soon as he arrived in Hong Kong from Perth’s rural farmlands. He quickly embraced the fast paced, rapidly changing Hong Kong fashion scene, applying his skills amid the Western-style salons of the 70s as wash ‘n’ wear perms became the rage and blue jeans, accompanied by a disco beat, replaced the cheongsam.
Mr Robinson headed for Europe where he honed his skills with mentors such as Vidal Sassoon and as the only non-French member of the team at top French coiffure Alexandre d’Paris, he styled for couture collections at Chanel, Lagerfeld, Balmain, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.
Mr Robinson has worked with some of Asia’s screen greats such as Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh and the late Leslie Cheung. Some of his most creative work was with Anita Mui and he credits her with allowing him to explore the boundaries of inventive hair styling.
Today Mr Robinson is Director of kimrobinson, the exclusive boutique salon in Hong Kong, where he relishes the return of glamour and draws on his experience to reinvent and create new styles in the knowledge that oriental beauty will continue to inspire his creativity.
