Jane Chen
The University of Melbourne

Jane is completing Honours in Sociology at The University of Melbourne, after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Asian Studies in 2018. She is fascinated by the effects of policy and business upon social inequality, and champions intersectional and lived experience-led responses to contemporary social issues. Her thesis focuses upon representations of unemployment in Australian social enterprises, as a critical evaluation of the extent to which their use of language empowers people experiencing barriers to the labour market.

Alongside her studies, Jane is a Youth Advisor to the Centre for Multicultural Youth, where she aims to use her own experiences as a second-generation Chinese Australian to create more inclusive communities for young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. She is also a member of the Melbourne Hub of the Global Shapers Community (an initiative of the World Economic Forum), facilitating projects that aim to tackle inequality. Ultimately, she hopes to combine her interests in social research, community development and advocacy to spark unexpected opportunities for social impact in transdisciplinary spaces.
