Chair, Advance Green Network
Jack Whelan returned to Australia in 2008 after more than 25 years international experience in public and private sector roles focused on environment, sustainability and international development, with specific responsibilities for policy and advocacy on climate change, biodiversity and responsible business practices. Jack is currently associated with several Australia-based organisations, including Secretary of The Asia Foundation in Australia; Associate with the Foundation for Development Cooperation (FDC); chair of the Green Network with Advance Australia; COO of Sustainable Business Australia (SBA), and he sits on the steering committee of Landcare International. He also founded the Energy for All Partnership supported by the Asian Development Bank.
In Europe, Jack held senior positions with The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) in London, where he worked closely with global companies developing credible, effective and responsible core business development programs. He was instrumental in setting up Business Action for Africa, the UN Global Compact UK Network and the International Tourism Partnership.
As Environmental Policy Manager at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris, he coordinated collective action, policy and advocacy strategy with leading multinational corporations, and set up several sectoral development platforms, including Business Action for Energy, Business Action for Water and Business Action for Sustainable Development. He led business representation in the UN negotiations on climate change, biodiversity, energy, water, agriculture and sustainable development, and founded the World Business and Development Awards in support of the MDGs, presented biennially in New York during the UN General Assembly.
