Australian artist Michelle Ussher is celebrating the end of her Australia Council Residency at Acme with an exhibition project at the Acme Project Space. The exhibition, includes three other Australian artists in London – Daniel Lipp, Alex Pittendrigh and Marco Belfiore.
Michelle Ussher takes pleasure in imagining the layer of fiction we need to understand reality and the precipice of madness. Her paintings act as paragraphs in a nebulous fiction inspired by literature, anecdotes, film and other images.
An inherent part of Daniel Lipp’s practice is his catalogue of imagery. For him collecting images is a way to think, translate and register matter. Only a fraction of these images ever become paintings.
Alex Pittendrigh is a restless tourist of the sublime wherever he may find it, which he then tries to paint directly from the subconscious impressions projected upon the back of his brain. His sculptural works act as a therapeutic diversion to the paintings, tantalising and frustrating.
Marco Belfiore enjoys the simplicity of drawing. These drawings freely take on the form of video, performance, painting or animation. Irony plays a fundamental role in all his work, allowing him to change expressive register through ongoing reversals of meaning.
