I’ll sit slightly behind you is a double act featuring new collages, folded photographs, a video performance and a cannibalistic contract by Australian artists Chantal Faust and Paul Knight.
The exhibition explores the possession of intimacy and the intimacy of possession. Photographs are folded, figures collide and are conjoined in fantastical mutations. Relationships are forced through contact, dissection and acts of ventriloquism.
Knight’s digital collages represent a merger between found images of nature and pornographic tableaux while Faust’s video projection continues the question of an assumed intimacy via proximity, culminating in a recital of a Slavoj Zizek lecture, heard and interpreted without rehearsal within various stages of domestic setting.
The performance is accompanied by scanned images that illustrate the pressure of touch and a rupture of surface. The exhibition marks the completion of Paul Knight’s 2010 Australia Council for the Artist London Studio Residency, managed by Acme Studios.
