2018 Advance Boardroom Lunch: Sydney
The Advance community came together for a fascinating discussion on health informatics at the Advance Boardroom lunch with Advance Award winner, Professor Carolyn McGregor AM, Canada Research Chair (Alumni) in Health Informatics based at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Canada.
Carolyn is a world-leading data scientist working in the field of medicine and artificial intelligence, with collaborators from NASA to WA Health. She is a game-changer and innovator in her field having led pioneering research in Big Data analytics, cognitive computing, real-time stream processing, temporal data mining, patient journey modelling and cloud computing. She now progresses this research within the context of critical care medicine, mental health, astronaut health and military and civilian tactical training.
During the lunch, Carolyn spoke about the application of her work in neonatology to monitoring astronauts in space and fire and rescue workers in extreme conditions to better understand the side-effects of trauma, the risks of treatment and the connection of physiology to mental wellbeing.
Carolyn also spoke about the impossibility of de-identifying health data, as the electrical rhythms of our hearts are distinctive to us; rather like a finger print.
Winning the Technology Innovation Advance Award in 2015 has enabled her to build her professional network in Australia and give back to her country. Carolyn is a brilliant example of a #BornGlobal Australian leading on the world stage.
Guests were from Australia’s leading companies across health, tech, finance and academia.
A special thank you to Gilbert+Tobin for their generous hospitality.
