Meet one of our Advance Award Mentees!

This week our Asia Director, Stefanie Myers, met with 2016 Advance Global Mentee Thomas Brown in Jakarta. It was great to hear about his experience in the Advance Awards mentoring program.

We carefully match the successful applicants with one of our Industry Award Winners, for a 12-month, one-on-one Mentoring Program, to develop skills for professional clarity, self-awareness, and a successful career. Applications for our 2018 program open on the 14th of May. More info here

A quick Q & A with Thomas:

S: What was your motivation to join the Advance Mentoring program?

T: I always wanted to have a mentor relationship, but I didn’t know how to go about asking someone or finding someone that would fit for me. During both my study and my work experience I had read about how important it is to have a mentoring relationship. Having Advance as an external organiser made it so much easier for me to achieve this. I also liked how Advance gave me the opportunity to make connections and build a network globally. Even among the Mentees, we are still in touch! The support from Advance to be part of a peer network and join international leaders was amazing.

S: What has been the impact of the program?

T: Being a younger person in the development field meant that I sometimes don’t have the same confidence in my experience as others I work with. Having support from my Mentor  (Dr Alison Thompson OAM) gave me confidence that I was on the right path. The personal advice I received from my mentor was so inspiring because she was someone who followed a non-traditional path and was independent and so influential. She showed me that there is not one path to get to the top of my field. The value of the program beyond the mentoring relationship and learning is that it provides access to global influencers through Advance.
