Professor Barbara Evans is Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She is responsible for oversight of policy, management and quality assurance for doctoral and masters programs, and research supervision across the University, and for the provision of academic support and professional development programs for graduate students, supervising faculty and staff. Prior to this Barbara was Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Training) and Dean of Graduate Studies at The University of Melbourne.

With commitments to improving graduate education in a global context, quality assurance, national and international benchmarking, and sharing of best research higher degree practice, Barbara has been a keynote speaker at conferences in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and Asia. She has been Convener of Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies of Universitas 21 (an international network of research intensive universities) and of the Australian Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies. Barbara is also a key member of two global networks – the ‘Strategic Leaders’ Global Summits on Graduate Education’, hosted through the US Council of Graduate Schools, and ‘Global Forces and Forms of Change in Doctoral Education’, organized through the ‘Center for Innovation and Research in Graduate Education’ at the University of Washington.

Originally a zoologist, Barbara’s research resulted in many refereed publications and she is author and editor of three award-winning Australian Biology textbooks, each now in their fourth edition. She is also an Olympian, and was the leading Australian competitor in Gymnastics at the Tokyo Olympic Games 1964 and the World Gymnastics Championships in Germany 1966.
