Welcome from the Australian Consul-General, David Lawson
San Francisco is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the U.S. and welcomes more than 15 million visitors a year. It has a local community that shares Australia’s passion for the outdoors, fresh food and great wine. I welcome all Australians – visitors, tourists and ‘locals’ – to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Australians, have had an active involvement in Bay Area life since the days of the Californian Gold Rush. And today, San Francisco and Northern California offers excellent business and entrepreneurial opportunities, with Australians making their mark in the local academic institutions, the digital firms of Silicon Valley, the city’s renowned musical and art institutions, and in San Francisco’s thriving financial and business communities.
The Australian Consulate-General in San Francisco supports Advance – Global Australians, in its goals to connect Australians working around the world for the benefit of Australia as a whole.
I encourage all Australians living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area to join Advance, to enjoy and share in the many advantages of being a ‘Global Australian’ and of staying informed, connected and networked.
David Lawson
Australian Consul-General, San Francisco
Welcome from Advance San Francisco Chair, Marc Johnstone
The city by the bay is considered by many to be one of the most enticing and beautiful cities in the United States. A cultural, artistic and business hub, San Francisco draws many Australians both as tourists and expats.
It gives me great pleasure to be the Chair of the San Francisco committee, a small group of dedicated individuals who not only share a nationality, but a unique spirit to bring together Australians living in the broader bay area.
Advance is for global Australians living and working in any field who want to maintain and promote links back to the homeland and use their entrepreneurial spirits to forge new relations with fellow Aussies.
Advance’s activities will continue to galvanise the Australian community living on the West Coast of the United States.
I look forward to welcoming you to one of the many unique events and forums the San Francisco network will be hosting in 2008. This year marks an exciting milestone of major expansion into the Middle East and China and the crossing of the 10,000 member threshold.
Welcome to Advance!

An Australian researcher is on the road to riches after discovering a way to make broadband connections up to 100 times faster.
University of Melbourne research fellow Dr John Papandriopoulos is in the throes of moving to Silicon Valley after developing an algorithm to reduce the electromagnetic interference that slows down ADSL connections.
Most ADSL services around the world are effectively limited to speeds between 1 to 20Mbps, but if Dr Papandriopoulos's technology is successfully commercialised that speed ceiling would be closer to 100Mbps. [More...]
