After an absence of 33 years, the Australian Ballet returns to Paris with a world-beating programme - and Advance has negotiated discount tickets for its members.

Celebrated Australian choreographer, Graeme Murphy has created a Swan Lake that has left audiences and critics alike enchanted. Now Murphy's take on the classic ballet comes to Paris for a strictly limited season.

Advance and the Australian Canadian Association (YACA) are delighted to invite members to a private viewing and cocktail reception on Thursday 25^th September 2008, exhibiting works never before seen in North America.

Georgia Scherman Projects will be exhibiting three recent video works by international artists Allan Giddy (New Zealand / Australia), Mischa Kuball (Germany) and Shaun Gladwell (Australia), who has been selected to represent Australia at the 2009 Venice Biennale.

The exhibit is curated by Ihor Holubizky, a curator and cultural historian who has worked in public galleries in Canada and Australia, and is currently Senior Curator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

An introduction to the exhibition will be provided by Haema Sivanesan, the Executive Director of SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre), and a curator for Nuit Blanche Toronto 2008. Haema was formerly the Assistant Curator of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of NSW, in addition to curating a number of independent projects. She hails from Sydney, Australia and now resides in Toronto, Ontario.

The Man with the September Face Synopsis:

It’s 1985. Jesse is the king of the roller-rink. But he’s yearning. He knows there’s something deeper, a better way to be alive. His coach and Mum, Naura, runs the kiosk at the local rink and spins incredible tales about her imagined exotic heritage. The new girl, Harriet, intrigues Jesse with her naïve Marxism and aspirations to join the Bolsheviks. Wolf, the rink’s hot DJ lothario, throws down the gauntlet for skating glory, and for Harriet’s (or is it Jesse’s?) hand.

Caught between the scylla and charybdis of 80s hits: will Jesse go for ‘Gold’ or collapse into the neo-nihilism of Ultravox’s lament for the modern man, ‘Vienna’?

Can Jesse stay true? And who is the man with the September face...?

Advance is delighted to invite all members to an exclusive private viewing of new art works by the Torres Straight Islander Alick Tipoti. The show is to be opened by His Excellency Mr John Dauth LVO, Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, followed by Andrew Craig, Agent General for Queensland, in the presence of the artist himself.

Last year Tipoti won, for the second time, the prestigious Works on Paper Award in the 24th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. This, and his inclusion in Australian Art Collector Magazine’s 2008 list of the ‘50 Most Collectable Australian Artists’ confirms his reputation as one of Australia’s leading contemporary printmakers. International interest is also growing with his work being seen in art fairs in the UK and France and in January 2009 he will be showing in a major exhibition in New York.

Yale Alumni leave permanent reminder of visit

ANU students and Yale students will have a new opportunity to experience life on the other side of the world, thanks to an initiative announced at the conclusion of a week-long visit to ANU by a large group of Yale alumni.

A new ANU-Yale student fund will enable an ANU student to undertake study at Yale and vice versa. The ANU student scholarship will be funded by the Year of ‘49 Class at Yale. The fund will build on the already rich relationship and exchange between ANU and Yale, both members of the International Alliance of Research Universities. Interested students should stay tuned for further details in coming editions of On Campus.

The announcement came at the conclusion of a week-long visit by a group of 31 Yale alumni and their families for an ANU program that included seminars, lectures, tours and social events.

The group was hosted by ANU alumni and staff, with a number will be staying in the homes of ANU alumni.

The group took part in seminars by leading ANU academics, visits to national institutions – including a tour of Parliament House with Senator Kate Lundy, dinner with Justice Michael Kirby, a business lunch, an indigenous program, reception at the US Embassy (Ambassador Robert McCallum is a Yale alumnus) and a number of social events.
