Advance invites you to attend 'Wonder and Evanescence' an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by renowned Australian-American artist and mentor of the Advance arts network, Denise Green AM.

Having studied under the renowned painters Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell in the 1970's, Green has roots in the Western modernist tradition, first exhibiting in the groundbreaking New Image show at the Whitney Museum in 1978. For her first solo show at Sundaram Tagore Gallery New York, Green presents a range of mixed-media paintings and works on paper applying Indian and Aboriginal phillosophy to modernist painting.

About the artist:
Born in Australia, Green arrived in New York City in 1969. She has had a remarkable career and is an outstanding member of our community. In 2007 she received the Order of Australia and her works have been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Albertina Museum in Vienna.

Geoff Dyer - Dyer’s work is well known and respected nationally and internationally –particularly his distinctive, evocative oils of Tasmania’s natural and wild landscapes. He won the acclaimed Archibald Prize in 2003 with a powerful portrait of the Tasmanian author Richard Flanagan, and has been a selected finalist nine times since 1993. His work has also been a selected finalist in the Australian Gallery of New South Wales’ Wynne and Sulman Prizes on numerous occasions.

Ping Chen - However wild and expressionistic his painting becomes, Ping’s Chinese academic training is never far beneath the surface. Further studies at the Tasmanian University School of Art in Australia helped him to put his mastery of traditional techniques into a wider perspective and to fuse the influences of the artists he admired (Rembrandt, Degas,Francis Bacon and others), with contemporary theories. Ping's most recent works are integrating Western figurative and pictorial structures with the spirit of Eastern space and mark making. The freedom of using empty space in composition is derived from Chinese Taoist philosophy and traditional ink painting.

Anton Holzner -After some fifty years of painting, Anton Holzner’s oeuvre is one of enviable quality and authority, reflecting both his experience of the Australian landscape, its geology, spaciousness, vegetation, and of the human form. His expressive painting style may attract us in the first place, but it is the suggestion of human form or landscape that sustains our interest. He sees the Australia of the desert, the vast open spaces … that primeval quality … which gave him enormous insight, forming his character as a painter.

The Food Emporium Showcases Delicacies from Down Under in January

NY retailer joins the G’Day USA festivities with Australian Made, Australian Grown foods

Gourmet Mecca, The Food Emporium, went green and gold this January when it presented A Taste of Australia at all sixteen of its Manhattan locations. From January 15-28 New Yorkers were able to try and buy some of Australia’s most iconic foods and beverages from Tim Tams to Coopers Pale Ale and King Island Roaring Forties Blue cheese.

Members of Advance’s New York chapter were given the chance to win an Australian Made hamper filled with tastes from home by nominating which Aussie food they missed the most.

Advance member, Kelvin Birrell was the lucky recipient of the prize. The food he missed the most? Fish and chips, ‘The food I miss most is a good feed of fish and chips. I have lived in the US for 31 years and have never been able to find a fish and chip shop to compare to the wonderful and competitive fish and chip shops all over Australia. I spent a lot of time in Townsville before coming to the US. We would drive to South Townsville to our favourite fish and chip shop and then go to the sugar wharfs and sit on the edge of the wharf with legs dangling over the water and scarf down our fish and chips put of the newspaper wrapping. A cold can of XXXX went along with it of course!’ he said.

A Taste of Australia was supported by The Australian Made, Australian Grown Campaign (AMAG) which promotes genuine Australian products and produce globally. The event was part of the seventh G'DAY USA Australia Week program, arguably the largest foreign country promotion held annually in the United States.

“G’DAY USA and Australian Made, Australian Grown share a common goal to raise U.S. consumers’ awareness of the best Australia has on offer,” says Mr. Ian Harrison, Chief Executive of AMAG. “Shoppers at The Food Emporium just need to look for our green-and-gold kangaroo logo to get an authentic taste of Australia.”

Products including olive oil from Cobram Estate, Yarra Valley Dairy Marinated Feta, Brookfarm Macadamia Mueslis, Majans Bhuja snack mix, Waterwheel Waterthins, Leatherwood honey from the Tasmanian Honey Company, and Tucker’s Dessert Crackers were just some of the foods destined to become pantry staples in the U.S.

Solar-Gem Wins 2010 Australian Innovation Shoot Out in Silicon Valley

Solar-Gem, one of the New South Wales state finalists, took top honors at this year’s G’Day USA Australian Innovation Shoot Out at the Microsoft Campus in Silicon Valley on January 20.

Solar-Gem CEO Khimji Vaghjiani was named “Australian Innovator of the Year” by the judging panel of US technology investors and thought leaders, who were impressed with the possibilities of Solar-Gem’s innovative off-grid lighting and electricity system that can bring low-cost power to remote and poverty-stricken areas of the world – a target market of 1.6 billion people.

“Solar-Gem solves several critically important global problems at one time,” said Mark Anderson, CEO of Strategic News Service, and the chair of the judging panel. “Their technology can be a great enabler for economic development -- for health, education, security and communications in most of the world.”

Six other companies competed in the Shoot Out alongside Solar-Gem, including DigiSensory (NSW), IntelliGuard (Victoria),
Mid-Comp (Victoria), MultiTrode (Queensland), Syngenco (Queensland) and Zarloc (SA). In true Australian innovative fashion, the technologies cut a wide swath across sectors -- clean and green tech, business management software and hardware, and physical surveillance and IT security systems.

The Hon. Anna Bligh, Premier, Queensland made opening remarks, followed by a keynote by Dan’l Lewin, Microsoft Corporate Vice President, Strategic and Emerging Business Development. Each company had five minutes to present their technology and then two-minutes of Q&A with judges Deborah Magid (IBM Venture Capital Group), Chris Shipley (Guidewire Group), Allison Leopold Tilley (Pillsbury) and Prashant Shah (Hummer Winblad), along with Anderson. Companies were judged based on their ability to solve a recognized problem, demonstrate a clearly defined business model and market for their solutions, offer a solution superior to what’s already available and provide a reasonable return on investment.

In addition to the “Innovator of the Year” title, Solar-Gem received more than $20,000 in prizes from Austrade, ANZA Technology Network and Nyhus Communications, designed to facilitate its global reach while continuing to secure key US venture backing. The benefits of the Shoot Out win took hold immediately for Solar-Gem, as Vaghjiani was interviewed by Robert Scoble’s Scobleizer YouTube channel, a primary showcase for business innovators.

“Participating in the Innovation Shoot Out was an extremely valuable opportunity,” said Vaghjiani. “We look forward to putting this advice into action and continuing to build on the success we’ve already experienced.”

Shanghai-based Suren Gunatillake is a Melbourne boy and proud Essendon supporter, born to parents of Sri Lankan heritage.

I first “met” him on twitter, and discovered that he has a fascinating story to tell about his expat adventures in Shanghai and Hong Kong (he divides his time between the two cities because his wife Juliana, another expatriate Australian, is based in Hong Kong).

Suren is the CEO and Co-Founder of Totuba a service for people wanting to search for and compare educational courses and degrees in China. The company also offers consulting services to help education and training businesses from around the world to scope, plan, execute, and evaluate their presence in the China market. They also publish a blog about the Chinese education sector (www.chinaeducationblog.com).

The company is headquartered in Shanghai, with an office in Hong Kong and a network stretching across mainland China.

Suren’s love affair with the expatriate lifestyle began in his first year at university in Melbourne. “I received a scholarship from RMIT to study in South Korea. That trip was transformational, being my first real experience alone away from Australia. The outcome was a character-shaping and career-defining six months. It was in Korea that I became excited about the ‘Asian story’ and the world of international business. I knew my future would be in the Asia-Pacific region.”

In 2002, Suren and his now-former business partner were awarded fellowships from RMIT to explore the consumer and labor markets in China. “We were completely seduced by Shanghai’s buzz and the seemingly innumerable opportunities. It was risky, exciting, and pulsating, and I knew we had to be part of it somehow. So we began setting up a company in China towards the end of 2003.”

Doing business in China is definitely challenging, according to Suren. “It demands an ability to go with the flow. The legal system can seem to punish businesses, with some laws well overdue for revision. And any website can be arbitrarily blocked. Also, finding good staff is difficult, and keeping them is even more difficult. I always encourage those considering a long stint in China to visit first to get a feel for the pace, the people, the processes, and the opportunities.”

To nurture his business and social links with Australia, Suren has led initiatives with the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and the RMIT University Shanghai Alumni Group.

In terms of everyday living in Shanghai, he comments: “I’ve found the infrastructure to be of a generally high quality, particularly telecommunications and public transport. However air and water quality is a constant concern. Language can be an issue in sticky situations, so it helps to have staff, colleagues or friends to interpret or negotiate on your behalf.”

Despite the challenges, he insists it’s worth it. “Shanghai is a city that can be in your face – loud, bright, crass, and whacky. It can also be quiet, mellow, calm, and sophisticated. Like other parts of China, there are contradictions everywhere, which makes the place interesting. In six years, I’ve never had a boring day.”

Sustainability Set to Become Big Business

A dominantly corporate group attended the launch of the founding partnership between Westpac Institutional Bank and the Advance Green Network at the Australian Consulate in New York on January 27. The event came on the heels of the announcement in Davos Switzerland that the Corporate Knights Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations had just recognized Westpac as the 15th most Sustainable Corporation in the World. Westpac is the top Australian corporation on this list and the only Australian bank to receive this recognition.

Continuing to show leadership in this area, Hugh Killen, Managing Director of WIB in New York introduced The Hon Robert Hill, Chairman of the Australian Carbon Trust and Adjunct Professor in Sustainability at the United States Studies Center, to speak about the new programs being developed at the Australian Carbon Trust.

Modeled on the larger UK Carbon Trust, the Australian Carbon Trust, granted 75 million dollars in government funding over 5 years, was asked to deliver 2 programs: The Energy Efficiency Pledge Fund and The Energy Efficiency Trust. They have also just been asked to manage a third program in Certification.

Professor Hill introduced the three panelists. Richard Fuller of Great Forests Inc outlined how his company has grown and strengthened to become the largest environmental consulting firm on the US East Coast with clients from Goldman Sachs, Disney, Hilton, etc. on sustainability and other issues. With over twenty years of experience, Richard offered the audience great insights and experience in a robust Q&A about how to acquire information in this space and what it is worth

Ben McCallum of Lime Energy spoke of the enormous lack of understanding of reducing operating costs/carbon footprint, concern of upfront capital expenditure requirements and the nature of the tax incentive and rebates programs available to assist businesses make the transition. Ben said that in many cases they saw a 50% reduction in energy costs in the companies they outfitted.

Debra Goundrey of Sustainable World Capital gave a thorough and perceptive overview of what investment companies are looking for when they seek to invest in businesses that are offering services or opportunities in the sustainability areas and what is hampering that investment pace.

The dominant question of the evening was - How do we as a community make our lives and businesses more sustainable either for a sense of ‘doing the right thing’ or simply in the interest of saving money? The panel responded to the questions, which ran way over time and can be heard on the podcast below.

Where did you grow up in Australia?

Dad was a mining engineer so we spent a lot of time in different mining towns: Broken Hill where I was born, then Nanango, Moranbah and Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory which was an amazing place to live as an 8-11 year old. Then dad started getting head office jobs so we moved to Melbourne and then I finished high school and studied at University in Brisbane. My family is still in Brisbane so that feels like home.

What is your current position and your role?

I'm the co-founder of Shoes of Prey and look after the operations and business development for the business. Shoes of Prey allows you to design your own women's shoes online which we then hand make and deliver to you.

What made you decide on this type of work?

I've always wanted to start my own business. After studying commerce and law at University, where I met my Shoes of Prey co-founders Mike and Jodie, I tried being a lawyer and wasn't too keen on it. So I went to Supercheap Auto Group for 2 years and developed a liking for retail. Next stop was 2.5 years at Google doing advertising sales. From there I had a choice, I loved my job at Google but I still wanted to start my own business. The time seemed right so Mike, Jodie and I started brainstorming ideas for a business. We liked the online retail space as it combined our skills nicely, and Jodie loved custom designed shoes, so we thought we'd try our hand at building a website that allowed women to custom design their own shoes.

What is the best part of your job? Can you describe some of your most memorable moments/stories?

The best part is putting all the skills I've learnt in my career to date into our own business. It's exciting building something from scratch and having customers who genuinely love our product. I loved my job at Google but there is something extra you get out of working on a business that's yours.

The most exciting times have been when people write stories about our business and our product. We're in the current (February 2010) issue of Marie Claire which is introducing lots of fashion loving women to our brand. We also write a business blog discussing everything that's happening as we build the business and we use it to crowd source ideas from our readers. In December the blog was listed as a 'Blog of Note' by the Blogger team and we had over 22,000 visitors to the blog for the month. It's great to know that people are interested enough in what we're doing to want to read about it, and that they're engaged and generous enough to share their thoughts and ideas with us.

What are the challenges and advantages you face in your industry in Australia?

We'd love to have our shoes made in Australia but unfortunately it's just not possible. Our shoes are all handmade and there just aren't the people with the skills to hand make shoes in Australia anymore, all of that has moved offshore. That's a shame and it means we spend a lot of time traveling working with our suppliers in other countries.

While it's a challenge in another way it's an advantage. We're learning a lot about doing business in countries like China and it's giving us more ideas on how we can build businesses using these new skills we've learnt.

What suggestions do you have for other Australians wanting to follow a similar path?

Get in there and do it. A lot of people want to start their own business but they never quite get around to doing it. If you think it's something you might want to do, start planning for it now. Mike, Jodie and I worked for a couple of years with the aim to save enough money in case we decided to leave our jobs. We avoided entering into a mortgage so we had the financial flexibility to start a business if we wanted to. Then, once we decided we wanted to do it, we did as much as possible part time and only left our jobs when it was absolutely necessary for Shoes of Prey. And by that time we'd done a lot of beta testing and were reasonably confident that the business could succeed.

It's certainly easier and safer to keep working for someone else, but if you want to start your own business it takes some planning, so start doing that now.

If I didn’t live in Sydney I’d live in...?

Byron Bay. The beaches are some of the best in the world and for a small and laid back town there's always so much happening.

I should add that I LOVE traveling to other parts of the world, but it's tough to beat Australia as a place to live.

Women in leadership - Michelle Guthrie

Hong Kong based Michelle Guthrie has managed to straddle the life of a CEO with a family and provides some insight into how she's achieved this.

What is your current role and where are you based? I'm presently the Chair of Plan International Hong Kong. Founded over 70 years ago, Plan is one of the oldest and largest children's development organisations in the world. I'm based in Hong Kong but spend most of my time travelling to Australia and through Asia.

What is your connection with Australia? I was born and was educated in Sydney and started my career at Allens Arthur Robinsons there as a lawyer before moving to Singapore.

Outline the path that led you to Hong Kong. I had been working for News Corporation (BSkyB in London and in Sydney at FOXTEL) and transferred to STAR TV in Hong Kong in 2000, initially working in Business Development and became CEO there in 2003.

What have been your biggest challenges balancing a career and motherhood and how have you managed these challenges? Dealing with the guilt in not always being there is very difficult. Having a supportive husband and family makes a huge difference.

Who were the women you looked up to as you established your career? The women I've met who have managed companies have been very impressive - straight-talking and focussed.

What have you learnt from mentors, both men and women? Be passionate about what you do.

What advice do you give to women who want to have a successful professional and personal life? You can't have it all - at least not all at the same time! It's important to realise that some things have to give and there is no point feeling guilty about that.

What has been the single greatest lesson you know now that you wish you knew 20 years ago? Don't try to map out your career. Be open to opportunities as they arise.

Welcome to the first Advance Green Sector Newsletter. In March of 2009 Dr Shi launched the Green Network at the Advance Asia 50 Summit in Beijing. One of our first objectives was to create a body of Australian experts in the sector who would be available to work as an advisory group both to government and the private sector in Australia. Senator Wong announced the formation of this group in New York in September and Howard Bamsey announced the formation in London in November.

The Advance Green Advisory Group is one of the key assets that our Network can offer the growing Green Sector in Australia. Due to the early development of a carbon market in Europe this is the first time in our nation’s history our greatest experts reside overseas. With Australia poised to develop it’s own carbon market 2010 is a pivotal year to harness and learn from the experience of these individuals about the carbon market, the pitfalls and successes and best solutions for Australia. From Copenhagen to Mexico

The Copenhagen Conference in December 2009 was one of the decade's most highly anticipated events of the decade. But what did the delegates actually agree and where does this long-running conversation go from here? Advance Green Network member, Rebecca Wright, provides her view.

The outcome of the COP15 summit in Copenhagen in December was a non-politically binding accord to announce their emissions reductions. After two weeks of negotiations, drama, threats, protests and delegate walk-outs, this was the result, and the accord states that all countries must sign a binding agreement this year, in Mexico. Although this was a disappointing and lower than expected result for many, at least the larger economies of US, China, India and Brazil announced some cuts, which was more than we had before. It was agreed that the voluntary cuts would be monitored, reported and verified by the countries themselves, but with international analysis of these reports. Some general principles were also agreed such as limiting temperature increase to 2%, preventing deforestation, and providing funding to assist developing countries in adaptation and mitigation efforts.

It is difficult for all countries, large and small to all agree on what is arguably one of the most emotionally charged issues of our time, something never before tackled on such a global scale. Deciding the fate of our planet for future generations is a huge responsibility to bear, and there will be accusations whatever the outcome. It will never be enough for some and too much for others, but at least everyone agrees now that more needs to be done. Compromise is the key word for the negotiations, but can the Earth survive a drawn-out compromise? The next meeting is in Mexico at the end of 2010, one of the most polluted cities on earth, which may help global leaders come to their senses and help reach an agreement.

Despite the less than hoped for outcomes, there is still positive fallout with businesses and countries/states still moving ahead with adaptation and mitigation plans, as they realise the inevitable and work towards a lower carbon future. One of the most significant developments in the climate change debate is the increasing involvement of China and its enthusiasm for clean energy intiatives, along with the recently announced 45% CO2 reduction from 2005 levels by 2020.

A local example of this was highlighted in Hong Kong (South China Morning Post, 16 January) where the Environment Bureau is currently undertaking a study to see how they can reduce impact locally. Given 60% of Hong Kong’s CO2 is produced by coal-fired power plants, they are considering more aggressive climate change policies, such as early closure of coal-fired power plants, introduction of biofuels, switching to more gas use, energy efficiency standards for vehicles and white goods. All of these would help to comply with the 45% reduction target for Hong Kong. Hong Kong will also play host to the C40 Cities – Climate leadership Group in November - a group of the world’s largest cities committed to tackling climate change. This, and the recent formation of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, should further raise the issue to clean up the city around us.

There is far more information about this that can possible fit into this small update, however we will endeavour to provide snapshots of the regional projects in our next update (including Australian updates), despite a lack of international agreement from Copenhagen.

The multi award winner is confirmed to play this year’s Rockwave festival in Greece, along with The Killers, Moby, Placebo, Duffy, Motley Crue and Tricky. Scott Goodheart Head Men’s Coach French (Field) Hockey Federation, Paris Scott moved to Paris just over a year ago to take up the position of Head Men’s Coach for the French Field Hockey Federation and also Coach of the French Men’s National Team. After working in the corporate arena Scott decided to take some time out to pursue more personal interests, completing a Masters in Medieval History and working part time in the sporting industry.
