A SPECIAL taskforce, headed by the Prime Minister's national security adviser, Duncan Lewis, has been set up to co-ordinate Australia's response to the violence against Indian's students. The action by Kevin Rudd indicates how serious the issue has become for Australia, threatening the relationship with an increasingly important country, and the lucrative international students sector.
The taskforce, which includes senior officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Attorney-General's Department and the Departments of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, and Immigration and Citizenship, met for the first time yesterday. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Stephen Smith, told Parliament "through this taskforce the Australian Government is showing its resolve to play its part in collaboration with the states to respond to this very serious issue".
