Dr Peter Doherty addresses Advance NY Life Sciences
Dr. Peter C. Doherty, Australia's eighth Nobel Prize laureate in the sciences, joined the Advance Life Science group in New York on Tuesday, May 15 to share some of the reminisces described in his new book, "The Beginner's Guide to Winning a Nobel Prize' (Columbia Press).
Dr. Doherty and Dr. Rolf Zinkernagel (Switzerland) received the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for findings they made at the John Curtin School of Medical Research in Canberra in the early 1970's.
Dr. Doherty, a Queensland native, runs research groups at the University of Melbourne and at St Jude's Children’s Hospital.
His anecdotes mentioned various Hollywood personalities, much to the audience's delight, with whom he has interacted as part of St Jude's fundraising activities.
In attendance were The Hon. John Olsen, Australian Consul General to New York and his wife, Julie Olsen and Michael Banner, Emeritus Professor.
Following his presentation, Dr Doherty kindly accepted an invitation to be on the Advance Life Sciences Roll Call which highlights our celebrated Australian scientists in the US.
Dr. Doherty went on to sign copies of his book and chatted far into the evening over dinner with a group of lucky Advance members.
